Daly Cherry-Evans Titans: Five burning questions after Manly halfback’s Gold Coast defection

THE angry Sea Eagles pulled their contract offer to Daly Cherry-Evans two days before season kick-off against Parramatta. Coach Geoff Toovey insisted the champion halfback might still stay.

He didn’t. Instead, he stunned his teammates by telling them minutes after a thumping from the Eels that he was joining the Gold Coast Titans on a four-year contract from 2016.

It was a bombshell decision on the first Friday evening of footy for this season and has thrown up some major issues, for both clubs and the game at large. Here are five burning questions after DCE’s defections.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR MANLY’S SEASON?

Already described as having a “toxic culture” by former veteran Anthony Watmough, this stunning development could be terminal for the Sea Eagles’ dressing room morale. Although they are incredibly adept at dealing with internal strife, such a stunning announcement from their key playmaker just one game into the season will come as a hammer blow. Cherry-Evans was already on the nose with many teammates, who watched the likes of Watmough and Glenn Stewart exit the club as Manly positioned itself to re-sign the premiership-winning halfback on a big-money deal. To be told they had gone through all the upheaval for nothing would have gone down like a lead balloon in the Sea Eagles sheds on Friday night. Cherry-Evans’ very public pursuit of a contract at rival clubs had built up the angst, which reportedly saw him dubbed “Yoko Ono” during pre-season. The newly-added spite towards Cherry Evans can only be counter-productive – and that’s just within the team. With Manly fans also reeling from the conflict within their club and now this bombshell decision, it would not be a shock if Cherry-Evans was booed by his own fans at next Saturday’s Brookvale Oval match against Melbourne. As for a season finish - Manly had already been widely-predicted to slide out of the top eight for the first time since 2005 and the DCE drama will only cement those opinions, despite the Sea Eagles still boasting a team littered with champion

Moomba excitement is here again

MOOMBA organisers are expecting more than one million people to enjoy this weekend’s festival, with the Bureau of Meteorology announcing weather conditions in the mid-20s for Melbourne.

A top of 23C is expected today, rising to a top of 25C tomorrow.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the annual festival had become an integral part of the city after a “much-needed” makeover.

“Melbourne embraces many things; we embrace the sophisticated but we’re also prepared, on occasion, to embrace the daggy. And that’s a good thing. It’s a family thing,” Cr Doyle said.

“It’s no surprise that when I first became Lord Mayor I thought the Moomba parade was dreadful and we had to make a call back then; do we actually beef it up and invest in it and make it the pride of Melbourne again or do we let it go quietly? Is it an idea whose time had now passed?”

Big crowds are expected to line St Kilda Rd for the 11am Monday parade, the traditional focus of the festival.

King of Moomba Shane Warne and Melbourne-raised Bollywood star Pallavi Sharda, crowned Moomba Queen, will sit atop a float performing their royal duties.

Great Satire and Marketing Take Care of "Unfinished Business"

Satire is best when everyone can laugh. Such is the case with a marketing campaign for the movieUnfinished Business, which opens today.

Vince Vaughn, Tom Wilkinson and Dave Franco strike the poses we know so well from stock photos — those generic images adorning white papers, clickbait and yes, even blog posts on this venue. To promote their movie, the actors recreate many of your favorite stock photo stereotypes, such as business people pointing at a screen; business people inexplicably standing in wedge formation; and business people clapping about … something.

“Successful brands are becoming platforms and need to do more than just drive consumers to a purchase,” a Forbes story about digital marketing stated. “They have to inspire them to participate.”

One of these kids is a lot like the other. In a wonderful blend of marketing and satire, the cast of “Unfinished Business” appears in 12 photos, including the one above (top), lampooning stock images, such as this Shutterstock photo (bottom).

This is the intersection of brilliant parody and culturally savvy marketing. And everyone is in on the joke, from the movie studio, 20th Century Fox, to a stock image company, iStock by Getty Images.

Unfinished Business is a comedy about “a hard-working small business owner and his two associates who travel to Europe to close the most important deal of their lives,” according to the movie’s IMDB page. “But what began as a routine business trip goes off the rails in every way imaginable — and unimaginable.”

Speaking of IMDB, these stock images already appear as photos on the actors’ pages. We can’t be surprised by Vaughn and Franco participating in these shenanigans, given their roles in comedies such as Old School and 21 Jump Street.

But it’s delightful to see the usually dramatic Emmy Award-winner Wilkinson (famous for playing U.S. President Lyndon Johnson in Selma and Gotham City crime boss Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins) hamming it up too.

So it’s great satire and marketing all in one. Even if we never see the movie, we’re left with a favorable impression of Unfinished Business because it offers an easy — and free — way for us to join the fun.

Harrison Ford injured in plane crash

The 72-year-old star of the Indiana Jones and Star Wars films reported engine failure and crash-landed his vintage plane on a Venice golf course.

He was breathing and alert when medics arrived and took him to hospital in a "fair to moderate" condition, a fire department spokesman said.

His son Ben, a chef in Los Angeles, later tweeted from the hospital: "Dad is OK. Battered but OK!

His publicist said: "The injuries sustained are not life threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery," . The nature of Ford's injuries have not been disclosed but website TMZ, which first reported the story, said he suffered "multiple gashes to his head".Shortly after take-off from Santa Monica Airport, he said he was having engine failure with his 1942 Ryan Aeronautical ST3KR and was making an "immediate return".He was unable to reach the runway and landed on the Penmar Golf Course, where onlookers pulled him from the plane fearing it could explode.

Officials said the plane had been flying at about 3,000 feet (900m) and hit a tree on the way down.

"It just sounded like a car hitting the ground or a tree or something," Jeff Kuprycz, who was playing golf told the Associated Press news agency. "He ended up crashing around the eighth hole."

Christian Fry of the Santa Monica Airport Association said it was "an absolutely beautifully executed emergency landing by an unbelievably well-trained pilot".

Film producer Ryan Kavanaugh, who also witnessed the accident from his office, told The Hollywood Reporter: "He literally had five seconds, and 99% of pilots would have turned around to go back to the runway and would have crashed."


"Harrison did what the best pilots in the world would do," he continued. "He made the correct turn that the plane was designed for with an engine out."

'Moderate trauma'

After crash-landing, Ford was initially treated by doctors who happened to be at the golf course.

He broke his leg in June last year on set at Pinewood Studios while filming a scene involving a door on the Millennium Falcon spaceship.

Ford took up flying when he was in his 50s and is also trained to fly helicopters.

In 1999, Ford crash-landed his helicopter during a training flight in Los Angeles but both he and the instructor were unhurt.

A year later a plane he was flying had to make an emergency landing in Nebraska. Again he and his passenger escaped unhurt.

Momofuku Ando: Google celebrates creator of instant ramen

Google is celebrating the 105th birthday of the man behind instant ramen, Momofuku Ando, with a dedicated doodle.

The Taiwanese-Japanese entrepreneur was first inspired to develop instant ramen when he realised one of the most pressing issues facing post-WWII Japan was hunger, after watching people queue for hours for a bowl of ramen.

Ando, who once said that “people can only be content when there is enough food,” was determined to help end the hunger in Japan and spent months developing a fast and cheap method for creating palatable instant ramen.In 1957 Ando discovered that by flash-frying ramen noodles in tempura oil, tiny holes would appear in the noodles, causing them to cook almost instantly once they are covered with hot water.

Ando continued to develop his discovery and in 1971 created Cup Noodles, before eventually inventing “Space Ram” – instant noodles to be eaten in space – when in his nineties.

The Doodle appears on Google’s homepage across the US, Latin America, parts of Europe and Africa, Australia and Japan.
